Chiropractic Definition
Chiropractic is a non-intrusive complementary and alternative form of medicine. It focuses on the musculoskeletal function of your body by manipulating joints and the soft tissues around them. There is lots of speculation around what else chiropractors may be able to treat, but at our clinic, we strictly treat research-based musculoskeletal conditions.
Examples of what chiropractors can treat:
- Car Accident Injury
- Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Problems
- Sciatica
- Work Related Injury
- Pinched Nerve
- Whiplash Treatment
- Headaches
- Neck Pain
- Low Back Pain
Evidence-Based Chiropractic
We provide only evidence-based treatment. Before we implement any new treatment or therapy in our practice, we require a high standard of research to be performed with statistically significant results. Our chiropractic services include:
- A thorough history and physical examination to diagnose your condition and determine its cause
- Spinal adjustments and muscle therapy to get you immediate relief and more functional movement
- Posture and movement assessment and training to deal with the cause of your symptoms
A chiropractic adjustment is just one of many tools that we use to take care of you. Our doctors focus on techniques that we know will help you recover from injuries and every day stresses affecting your body.
Your session with the chiropractor might be a standalone adjustment, or it may be part of a broader scope of treatment. Whatever it is, we will be sure to explain what we’re doing and why we’re doing it. We want you to leave us feeling better and feel that your questions were answered.
The Target of Chiropractic Treatment
Whether you’re experiencing pain or loss of movement from a new injury, car accident, or you’ve been suffering from pain and movement limitations for years, the presence of pain causes your body to become caught in a loop of immobility, strength imbalances, and faulty biomechanics.
- Immobility takes over after inflammation, swelling, and muscle tightness set in.
- Strength Imbalances come after the body compensates for immobility.
- Faulty Biomechanics such as slouching or bending incorrectly make problems worse.
With fresh injuries or old problems coming from years of sitting and bending incorrectly, the only way to escape the cycle of pain and loss of motion is by dealing with the source of these problems bubbling under the surface.
Our chiropractic care is part of a multi-prong effort and the collaboration of many healing fields to take care of you and get you back to your life! Research has shown that chiropractic care can provide immediate pain relief, but oftentimes we must show our patients how to fix their everyday behavior in order to remain pain-free.
Your Habits Affect Your Prognosis
Your body is a complicated machine made of many parts, and we need to assess your spine and its relationship with your everyday movements and postures. Every person develops patterns in their everyday life: an office worker may have shoulders that are chronically pulled forward, a dentist may always be tilted to one side, a flooring contractor may consistently reinjure their low back. These patterns multiplied by time over years of repetition can leave you susceptible to injury or may even result in pain themselves. It may not always be clear how one joint, imbalance, or bad habit can affect another part of the body, but the link is always there.
Injuries can also force you into new habits: leg pain may force you to use more of your back to stand up, shoulder pain may have you twist at your low back to reach for something, and neck pain may create a restricted range of motion in your neck. All of these newly developed habits can hold you back from a full recovery from the injury.
During your assessment with our chiropractors, we find out three things:
- What led to the injury? Was it a car accident or is it because you get out of bed funny every morning?
- How is your injury changing the way you sit, walk, drive, hold your phone, or get in and out of bed?
- How can we reduce your pain and enable your body for a full recovery?
What to expect from chiropractic treatment
Chiropractic manipulations are commonly recognized as a great pain management tool! After a chiropractic manipulation, you are likely to feel immediate and noticeable relief in symptoms. This therapy can help improve posture, realign bones, and allows your joints to return to their natural position.
Your part
Daily habits heavily affect your prognosis and progress. A chiropractor may be capable of making you feel better, but if your movement patterns and habits get in the way, relief may be short-lived. Your chiropractor will likely prescribe a short daily routine to strengthen and stretch your muscles along with ways to modify your lifestyle in order to return you to function and keep you pain-free.
Physical therapy may help
Although chiropractors can provide immediate relief, if significant and long-lasting changes need to be made in your movement patterns, strength, or endurance, a physical therapist will provide you with the tools to do so. Physical therapy is more than just exercise, it offers a way to re-educate your body and lead you towards sustainable pain reduction and improved mobility.
Massage therapy may help
Muscle spasms and injured muscular tissues may take a long time to heal on their own, even with the proper exercise routine and chiropractic manipulation. Therapeutic massage offers a way to decrease muscular tension, improve range of motion, reduce discomfort, and increase circulation. Our well-trained staff therapists are here to support your healing journey.
“While other professions are concerned with changing the environment to suit the weakened body, chiropractic is concerned with strengthening the body to suit the environment.”
